SMITH
Charlotte Elizabeth "Betsy", 86, passed away August 18, after an extended illness. She was the youngest of three daughters, born November 29, 1921, in Newport, Kentucky to school teachers Charles Edison Smith and Hannah Hearne Smith. The family moved to Cincinnati around 1925. After graduation from Hughes High School, she attended Otterbein College and then the University of Cincinnati where she completed her B.A. in Dietetics. She continued her education and received a Masters in Public Health from Case Western Reserve. During World War II she was commissioned in the Army and worked at a hospital in Charleston, SC, serving returning wounded soldiers. Just as the war in Europe was ending, military orders took her to a very interesting tour of duty in Germany. Captain Smith was recalled to service at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. during the Korean War. During his illness President Ike Eisenhower was among the many patients for whom she prepared special diets. Her many distinguished careers in dietetics included one with the U.S. Public Health Service, another with the State of Ohio, and her service in the U.S. Army Reserves. Her work in public health, especially reviewing nutritional programs, took her to speaking engagements and other work in almost every state in the union. Her family and her church, Westwood First Presbyterian, were very important to her. She loved to travel, play music on her organ, attend musical events, and do volunteer work. For many years she served the immigrant community as a Travelers' Aid volunteer teaching recent arrivals. She is mourned by her sister Genevieve and many nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to attend a visitation Saturday August 23, 2008 from 11:30 AM until time of funeral service at 12:30 PM at the Dalbert, Woodruff & Isenogle Funeral Home 2880 Boudinot Ave. at Queen City Ave. In lieu of flowers please send contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, 644 Linn St., Suite 1026, Cincinnati, OH, 45203, or to the charity of your choice.
